The Indo-Dutch Programme on Alternatives in Development (IDPAD) promotes social science research that is of relevance to development in India. With a view to increase relevance and utilisation of research the programme stimulates interaction between researchers and users of research, including policy makers from government and NGO's.
From 2002-2006 the fifth phase The Quality of Life in a Globalising World has been implemented
IDPAD grew out of intensifying contacts and co-operation between Indian en Dutch social scientists, inspired by the need to explore 'alternatives in development'. Since 1981 research has been carried out by researchers in India and in The Netherlands working together. Female and young scholars increasingly participated in the programme.
After 25 years of successful collaboration IDPAD is coming to an end and therefore two symposia have been organised, in Hyderabad on 1-3 November 2006 and in The Hague on 24 November 2006. Further information and papers are available by clicking here.
IDPAD's main activities have been the promotion and funding of research projects, seminars and exchange visits. In addition, the programme funded dissemination of research results, workshops with stakeholders and publication of working papers and a Newsletter.
In 2007 the website will continue to be updated with working papers and research results.
IDPAD is jointly implemented by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) in New Delhi, and The Netherlands Foundation for the Advancement of Tropical Research (WOTRO) in The Hague.
